Like most small businesses, Jungle Janes started with a recognized need for knowing how our food is grown, or raised, and that it can have a major impact on ones physical, mental and emotional health as well as the environment. We started growing our own foods, and have a love of gardening.
We began by building a custom greenhouse from sourced materials and enjoying the 12 x 12 space. It did a fine job of providing plants for our home and garden. But, it was a custom piece that not everyone could put together, let alone find the materials to make it an attractive addition to any yard space. So, the search was on to source products for those people who wished to experience the cost-saving, and health, benefits of growing their own plants, for landscaping purposes, and the remarkable flavor difference from what you can get from the super-market, not to mention the knowledge of eating freshly grown produce that you know how it was grown.
We wanted to accomplish this within a reasonable budget for the average Gardener. There is nothing more satisfying that growing things that truly add to the quality of your life, and that was a driving principle for us. Greenhouse gardening allows our customers the benefit of growing year-round, and we want to do everything we can to help them in that endeavor.
We started out looking for products that we, as consumers, would be happy with and matching those products with others products that would create a really unique experience for our customers. As we searched, we also wanted to be responsible with products that created the least environmental impact, so that people could grow food and not worry about if it was gmo, or if it had been grown with the use of toxic products. We believe that the best way to nourish our bodies with the nutrients it requires for good health is with natural, organic foods.
By the end of 2012, we were ready to provide what we hoped would be a beneficial and happy environment to people shopping for Greenhouses, Yard Art and other unusual decorative and practical items for their home. We are truly a small business with Mike running the day to day business, and Kathy handling the behind the scenes processes, and filling in at the shop when deliveries and shipments take Mike elsewhere. Our shop began to take shape after the rehab and renovation of our "Little Old Farmhouse" in what has become the heart of the Sequim shopping center. It was lovingly referred to as "The Little Blue House," and is an experience in and of itself, and was the initial encouragement that made us realize we had a great opportunity and a good location to work with. The property was once part of a farm in the heart of Sequim, and we still have cows for neighbors on the South East side of our 2 acres, and across 9th Street, we have Costco and a large shopping plaza for our customers convenience. It couldn't be better because it satisfied our interest in recycling a really old house back into a charming and useful building, and fitting into a community like Sequim which is known for protecting and revering farmland and our gorgeous surroundings (i.e. the Straights of Juan De Fuca and Olympic National Park).
Mike was encouraged to pursue the business by a few individuals that were already experimenting with Greenhouses and growing hydroponic vegetables, his son-in-law who worked in the construction industry as a Landscape development and Maintenance Manager for Seabrook, and family members who were already in the Retail trade. The old saying, "It takes a village" can certainly be applied to molding a business to best represent who you are and where your interests lie. Mike discovered he loved growing fresh tomatoes for display purposes, which we have done every year, and helping people with their greenhouse dreams, along with providing whimsical and useful garden art for everyone's enjoyment. Another important aspect is to run a business that does it's best to support the community and add to the scenery something a bit unexpected.
Our mission is to emphasize the benefits of growing your own food since we never know when that might become more important due to food supply issues, logistics or any number of things that can impact a person's ability to have access to what is important to them. It is not just the enjoyment factor, but realizing that we can responsibly do more to benefit ourselves and our family members when it comes to our food supplies and health. The sense of well-being is just a side benefit of time spent with your plants! We will continue to provide the best products possible to give opportunities to our customers wanting the satisfaction and peace of mind achieved by growing your own source of food and medicine. And then there is the fun of it, which should never be minimized, so we want our customers to have fun while visiting us and seeing what we have to offer.
We continue to monitor our product offerings and keep our eyes open to knew things that can make things easier, which is why we have added our Raised Bed Kits, and visit manufacturers to provide feedback and look for opportunities for improvement. We search for products requested and try to make custom items whenever possible. Your wants and dreams are ours, so never hesitate to let us know when you are looking for something or need assistance. If we don't know about a problem we have failed you unless given the opportunity to fix things, so feed-back is necessary for us.
